Johan Baptista van Uther first arrived in Sweden as court painter to Erik XIV in 1562 and then stayed in Sweden for the rest of his life. Besides portraits, the works of van Uther also consists of altar pieces and decorations for the Royal Castles. Nothing is know for certain about the life of van Uther before he came to Sweden, but it has been argued that he originated from either Antwerp or Utrecht, where records have been found in both cities that possibly correspond to him. The portraits of van Uther show an influence of the representational and semi-idealized compositions of Anthonis Mor.
