Dürer, Albrecht
Albrecht Dürer initially studied as a goldsmith under his father before focusing his education on the art of painting under Michael Wolgemut in 1486-90. After that he travelled around central Europe 1490-94, where he visited Colmar, Stasbourg, Frankfurt-am-Main and Basel. Dürer was active in various Italian cities between the years 1505-07 and later worked for a period in the Netherlands 1520-21, but otherwise had his productive base in Nürnberg. He was appointed Court painter to Maximilian I of Habsburg in 1512 and later also served his successor emperor Charles V. The art of Dürer is a complex fusion of late medieval craftsmanship and religious way of life in a combination with the new ideas of the Italian renaissance. The detailed preciseness of the late gothic era together with the quest for naturalistic realism driven by humanistic ideals created a special and unique expression of emotional intensity and intellectual ambition in the art.
