The young David Klöcker made his first Swedish connection when he was hired as a notar during the peace negotiations in Westphalia 1646-48. After that he travelled to Amsterdam where he studied under the German painter Juriaen Jacobsz. Shortly after he came in contact with the Swedish Govenor General of Pomerania, Carl Gustaf Wrangel for whom he executed several paintings during his stay at Wrangels residence in Wolgast in 1651-52. He then accompanied Wrangel to Sweden where he was introduced at court and painted for the Widow Queen Maria Eleonora. Ehrenstrahl later left Sweden for a study trip to Italy and several European courts before returning and settling as court painter in 1661.
